On October 21, the companies announced the first private-preview access for selected enterprise customers. Astra targets demanding tasks, Sol balances capability and cost, and Luna targets fast work at scale. This does not merge ChatGPT and Gemini; it gives IT teams another route to call OpenAI models, compare them with other offerings and connect Codex tools to Google’s Gemini platform for inference.
Rivals brought together by enterprise needs
Google says usage will appear on the existing Cloud bill and may count against spending commitments.
It also advertises data perimeters, authenticated identities, audit logs and VPC controls.
One bill and common controls
Prompts and outputs are not used for model training.
Zero Data Retention and Confidential Compute are described as coming soon, so they are not yet universal features.
Choice does not remove dependency
Model choice can reduce technical lock-in, but models differ in formats, cost, context limits and behavior.
Migration still requires tests and sometimes rewritten instructions. Companies must understand data paths, available regions, support and incident responsibility.
A battle for distribution
The agreement gives Google Cloud customers easier access to OpenAI models.
Conclusion
Its value will become clear after preview, when pricing, regional access, performance and contractual guarantees can be compared.
